Course Overview

This course guides students through the cultural, emotional, and social dimensions of studying abroad. Through practical strategies, reflection, and real-world examples, students learn how to navigate cultural transitions, foster belonging, and build resilience in diverse college communities.

You’ll explore:

Understanding Cultural Diversity in College

Learn how culture shapes identity, communication, learning preferences, and social norms.

Understanding Culture Shock

Break down the four stages—Honeymoon, Negotiation, Adjustment, Mastery—and recognize common symptoms such as homesickness, irritability, and difficulty concentrating.

Preparation Before Arrival

Discover how researching your host country, setting realistic expectations, and building language and cultural awareness can ease your transition.

Barriers to Inclusion & Belonging

Explore how stereotypes, unconscious bias, microaggressions, and language challenges affect student experiences—and how to navigate them.

Coping Strategies for Adjustment

Build routines, find support networks, maintain healthy connections to home, and practice self-care to strengthen emotional stability.

Strategies for Inclusive Relationships

Develop active listening, cultural empathy, and inclusive communication practices that foster trust, collaboration, and cross-cultural understanding.

With 15+ years in Higher Education—particularly in Housing & Residence Life—and 20+ years in the nonprofit sector, he brings deep expertise in leadership development, diversity and multicultural competence, and team dynamics.
